Tenor Banjos Vs. 5 String or 'G' Banjos

The Tenor, or 4 String banjo is predominantly used for Irish and Folk Music, and the 5 String or G Banjo is used mainly for American Blugrass.

The Tenor is a shorter scale instrument, often around 22 1/2 inches or 575mm., tuned in Fifths from low to high C-G-D-A (same pitch as Viola) or G-D-A-E (octave below mandolin) and played with a plectum or flat-pick.

The 5 string is usually tuned g-D-G-B-D (chord of G Major) or g-C-G-B-D and played with metal fingerpicks. 5th string is tuned a 4th Higher than the top D string and starts at the 5th fret. Scale length of the 5 string is typically 26 1/2 inches or 670mm. A 4 string version of the 5 string banjo also exists, known as a plectrum banjo. It has the same scale length as the 5 string.
