Mandolin
Family Strings

The Mandolin family starts with the
mandolin, tuned the same as a fiddle, GDAE. Next is the Mandola, tuned CGDA,
the same as a viola.
After these two, there seems to be some confusion as to what is what. The nomenclature
that we have adopted relies on scale length rather than the tuning used.
We have produced this chart as a rough guide, though there are no hard and fast rules as to scale lengths and tunings.

However it is important to ensure that the strings you are fitting to an instrument are compatible with the tuning and scale length.
Mandolin
8 Strings arranged in pairs. Tuned the same as violin (GDAE). Available in both Loop ends (fits most instruments) or ball ends (fits Crafter, Buchanan, Fylde, Freshwater etc)

Octave Mandola/Mandolin
8 strings arranged in pairs. Octave Mandolas and Octave Mandolins are usually tuned an octave down from mandolin.

8 strings in pairs normally tuned GDAE, other tunings also include GDAD ADAD and GDGD. Greek tuning is CFAD (one tone down from the top 4 strings of a guitar). These sets are for the 'normal' tunings. Scale length is similar to guitar. Available in unison sets (like a mandolin) or octave sets where the lower 2 courses are tuned in octaves (like a 12 string guitar). Please specify Ball or Loop Ends.
We can also custom gauge strings if your particular preference is not listed.
10 strings arranged in 5 courses of pairs. Scale length is shorter than guitar or bouzouki. Tunings are varied but include DGDGD and DADAD. ball (Fylde, Freswater etc) and loop ended varieties available.
